There are many things to think about, and learn, as you prepare to buy Real Estate
There are few things in life more rewarding than owning a property which you can be proud of and call your own, but you have to be ready for that commitment. For most people buying property means taking out a mortgage and making monthly payments for many years. This typically means cutting back on luxuries and such for at least awhile.
Buying property is a process
There are a number of defined steps which have to be taken before you finally own a property. You can work your way through these steps by yourself, or have a real estate agent help you. There are also other support personnel such as attorneys, loan officers, building inspectors, and possibly government officials with whom you will want to work.
Taking time to learn the process, and getting help where appropriate, can help make things go smoothly when you finally find the property you want to purchase. We would suggest looking over our Buyers Checklist to help you get started.
If you are unfamiliar with rural properties you should check out the information we've included on septic systems and wells. You might also want to look over our Mortgage information pages which discuss the loan application process.
If you haven't owned a property in Vermont you should catch up on the tax situation. You will want to learn about the taxes directly involved with purchases of property (Property Transfer Tax, Land Gains Tax), as well as the ongoing property taxes you will get to pay.
You should also be familiar with the various permits which are required to develop properties.
